MediaMobil Communication GmbH Company Profile

MediaMobil is a system integrator for high speed, high quality telecommunications solutions using satellite and terrestrial wireless networks. Since its establishment in 1994 the company has successfully carried out a number of system projects and product developments.

The business activities are currently structured into three units:

  1. System Projects
  2. Products
  3. Mobile Satellite Solutions

Furthermore, the company is spending significant resources on research and development. This is carried out internally as well as in the framework of partly funded projects under EU and regional R&D programs.

System Projects

Projects most relevant to SASS are the turnkey delivery of alarm and surveillance systems to customers in the United Arab Emirates. The alarm systems are installed in banks, shops and public buildings in a number of cities. The surveillance solution is a wireless CCTV network for the monitoring of outdoor locations. MediaMobil designed the overall system concept tailored to the customer requirements and realised the system using COTS components where applicable and own developments. Own developments included the alarm transmission subsystem for use via twisted pair leased lines, IP network based application software for the security center and the complete camera control subsystem for the CCTV network which has been designed as an IP network application. After the design phase MediaMobil was responsible for the supervision of the installation in the U.A.E. and commissioning. Pictures of some installations are shown below.

Product Development

Except of customised system solutions, MediaMobil develops products for sale in higher quantities to different customers. The most popular products are so called Data Switch Units and Voice Encryption Modules.

The Data Switch Unit enables the interconnection of different end user devices to Inmarsat-B terminals with automatic switching of the application data to different terminal interfaces depending on the application and transmission speed requirements. The product is currently in use with more than 400 terminals worldwide.

The Voice Inversion Modules are designed as an optional plug-in for Motorola two-way radios to enable voice encryption. The module is shown below. More than 1000 pieces have been sold.

Mobile Satellite Solutions

From the date of establishment MediaMobil developed solutions for data communications via the Inmarsat system for applications such as video conferencing and Intranet connectivity. The developments included application software and interface adapters, e.g. a gateway between an X.25 data network and Inmarsat High Speed Data channels which supports automatic V.25bis call control between the X.25 network layer and the satellite network.

Since the year 2000 MediaMobil is involved in the development of the M2SAT system providing mobile high speed data services up to 384 kbps via L-band space segments such as EMS and Thuraya. The developments include a portable satellite terminal based on COTS satellite modems and self developed control and interface units for satellite access control with QoS on-demand support as well as for the interfacing of IP and non-IP user equipment. A photograph of the terminal with flat panel L-band antenna is shown in the picture below.

On the gateway side MediaMobil was responsible for the implementation of the connectivity to terrestrial networks including ISDN, the Internet and the German ATM broadcast network.

R&D Projects

MediaMobil participated in a number of projects aiming at the development of advanced mobile satellite systems and services.

In the framework of the ACTS TOMAS project (Inter Trial Testbed of Mobile Applications for Satellite Communications) MediaMobil was involved in the development of the first testbed for high quality satellite UMTS services using geostationary space segments. The work included the definition and implementation of third generation tele services such as MPEG4 multimedia transmission and the validation of the system concept in end user trials. The TOMAS testbed made use of Inmarsat and EMS (European Mobile Satellite System) space segment capacity.

In the SUMO project (Satellite UMTS Multimedia Trials over Integrated Testbeds) MediaMobil was responsible for the development of a FDMA MAC layer interface in compliance with the URAN (Universal Radio Access Network). The implementation included signalling capabilities for advanced service features such as bandwidth on demand and Quality-of-Service dependent selection of satellite segments. Satellite trials were carried out using EMS and Intelsat Ku-band space segments.

In the framework of the TEN-Telecom funded SATISFY2000 project (Satellite Integrated Services for the Year 2000) MediaMobil led the workpackages System and Service Definition as well as System Implementation. The work focused on the implementation of the ground segment for a satellite network to provide high quality multimedia services to mobile and semi-fixed user terminals. The first Fixed Earth Station satellite gateway in the SATISFY2000 network was installed at MediaMobil premises in Bremen.

With the SASS project MediaMobil aims to combine its experience in alarm and surveillance systems and mobile satellite communication systems to develop a new technical platform for alarm and surveillance applications using fixed satellite systems. As such the project is part of the strategic plan to become a platform and service provider for fixed satellite services in the future.
